Literally it’s the world’s biggest and longest-running text message conversation; I know we can all send full novels to each other by phone now, but do you remember trying to write an SMS more serious or meaningful than “im here”

I think of it more as A Platform for AIM Away Messages more than SMS. The async nature of it feels very similar
