Back home in Hawai’i people debate the relative merits of mapping apps not on the speed of the routes but on the comically bad mispronunciations of street names. “At least this one is not as bad as the other one, which says I live on *garble* street”
People trust mapping apps a lot for good reasons but some who don’t know better now argue that the awful computer pronunciations HAVE to be the canonically correct pronunciation (“that’s how *app producer* says it”) and it’s almost unbearable.
Google gets piled on here a bit because it’s currently the least-bad so is used more prevalently. Tbc they all seem I have some work to do
But Google got a lot better since I was here. I wonder how they did it. Did google pay someone to just correct them? Do they have some automatic technique?
I would believe it if humandraulics were involved.
However the pronunciations are still atrocious to the extent that I find them unusable for correlating signs to spoken instructions; none of the voices have been taught to breathe which doesn’t work w a glottal stop; furthermore the use of cardinal directions remains uncanny
I didn’t encounter “head north” (east/south/west etc) til I got to the mainland. I find myself frustrated that the apps can’t accommodate mauka/makai etc - the way I still think about place here
I always want there to be a name for clockwise with Mauka toward the center.
Hm - wouldn’t that just be clockwise? (Mauka would always be centered, no?)
Clearly Makai can’t be towards the center, but I was just tying to be precise. One thing I don’t know: what is Mauka and Makai when you are in the valley between Kihei and Kahului? It’s like a saddle point.
My iphone is named "Halemaumau". If I keep my Bose headphones in English, they tell me they're connected to "hail maw maw" every time I turn them on 
Instead I keep them set to Swedish, which pronounces it alright.
the route planning is pretty bad in my neighborhood. it doesn't know which streets are paved nor their relative quality. it also doesn't know where the roads get completely washed out during a heavy rain
