Consider for example, how hard it would be to make your car take to the air. You could floor it, drive it as fast as you wanted - and it would still fly quite poorly. But with wings added, this all changes. It’s aerodynamics, not power, that matter.

I would love to hear your thoughts on on the energy density of near-term batteries. I am deeply pessimistic about useful flying range for even small capacity quads, but don't have the EE background to do it justice.

Good question, and there, too, it’s aerodynamics - not power - that matters. For example, Solar Impulse just successfully circumnavigated the globe on only solar/electric. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Solar_Impulse …

In my mind, drone delivery would be feasible only for items constrained by size and weight. Make a cheap container, possibly of cardboard, and of standard shape. Then if it fits and is under weight limit, with a reasonable CoG, it ships locally by drone.
