Hi, I grew up in the tropics and have a question about cold weather life: why isn’t there a product like some kind of heat tape to let you warm glassy surfaces to prevent the buildup of snow and ice?

Conclusion: this exists! Frost-fightahhh. Now the part of me that relentlessly tries to solve minor inconveniences with engineered solutions can go hack away on something else.https://mobile.twitter.com/honx/status/963816747706044417 …

hmmm...interesting question. i googled a bit and found this: https://www.frostfighter.com/clear-view-defrosters-about.htm … is this what you meant? but it's really just a regular window heater that you can retrofit...

Lots of cars have a defroster grid like this on the back window, but you have to start the car for it to work. In MN most people have a garage so it isn't a big issue. And those of us who don't just know it's a fact of life (or do remote start)

Thanks! “A fact of life” — feels like that might be another phrase for “a product that doesn’t exist yet..”

True! One product that does already exist is de-icing cables for roofs/gutters/rainspouts

If you are addressing windows, there is a device built in to most automobiles with the code name DEF or a trio of wavy arrows.
