What would it take to actually make the metric system standard in the US?

I’m personally also in favor of a global reset on electrons being defined as being positively rather than negatively charged. But I feel that has somewhat less buy-in at present.

industrial flat knitting machines are still in needles per inch + bed widths in inches because main customers 140 years ago were in the UK. brand i use made in germany + 150 years old. competitor is 140 years old in japan. together they have 90% of industrial flat knitting market

that said, after living in europe for a decade, all metric stuff felt fine for me except for temperatures: both weather and cooking. and maybe running pace (10 minute miles are 6:15 minutes per kilometer) never clicked with me.

and cups. i always missed the (very clunky and not precise) cup, teaspoon, and tablespoon measuring in baking. had a cooking scale, never got used to it. i feel like improvising or modifying baking recipes on the fly is so much easier to me when you start with cups.

probably because that’s how i learned. i can eyeball 2 cups of flour, but i can’t eyeball 250 grams of flour.

From personal experience making that suggestion to people.... civil war, invasion, occupation... something of that sort.

Standard for what? Land Surveyors cry at the thought of metric conversion. They'd do nothing but update documents for centuries. (And go to court to be expert witnesses over rounding errors in property disputes.)

I think the fact that we've been the last holdout for so long makes it a doomed effort. Using weird units is part of the American identity now.
