One thing making this query difficult is that, at the time, Walmart wasn't actually producing scotch. I'm 85% sure it was Walmart and not another American megastore.

I *feel* like this was a slatestarcodex thing or something, but I just can't find it anywhere. The argument was ~ that even if you might not personally choose Walmart-brand scotch, the existence of such a thing increased consumer choice which is better for everyone.
