Custom, on-the-spot name-keychain making exists! Interesting question: why hasn’t it replaced the racks of readymade stuff?

Fixed costs versus variable costs? And economies of scale derived from using centralized production?

Also the places that sell those tend to be kitschy tourist shops full of cheap crap that don’t actually care about us name weirdos :(

don't you think that they'd care about expanding their TAM if they could do it for the same cost?

If name-branded stuff were their primary thing, yes. But those stores have plenty of generic stuff too that is probably majority of sales.

The funny thing is I hardly know anyone w/ a conventional name that owns that stuff. Just us weirdos that feel left out that want it.

I don't think it's a care/don't care scenario. They're trying to sell those goods to as many people as possible and are targeting the biggest crowd of consumers they feasibly can. They're limited by real-world constraints.

Algorithmically generated tshirts are a great example of what happens to inventory when you remove those constraints.

I'm guessing you’re overthinking how much effort goes into stocking tourist trap kitsch shops. They’re so generic, yet obviously make enough money to be viable. I don't think the mentality in starting one is "I will get rich" - it's "I will maintain a lifestyle."

Oh, the TAM tweet made me think you were arguing in favor of it. Sorry! nm! I violently agree with you!

Karen asked why onsite production hasn't replaced readymade stuff, and I'm building the case for why not. And so are you. I just think we have different explanations. I don't think it's that they dgaf about people's names.
