It has an exceptionally good interface as it ALSO has to express a default path (it can be a standalone instrument) for all parameters in addition to what are inputs, outputs, and what the knobs modify

These are super-popular and fun modules. The interfaces are pretty nutty, so much that there are alternatives to them that can be bought 3rd party.
