It's surprising to me that people think "every belief should be possible to say out loud" is killing freedom of expression and experimentation, and not, say, a lack of housing that undermines the viability of artist communities.

Startups' recent growth did NOT occur during a period where "I can express any belief I'd like, no matter how odious" was true. (Has it ever been? Is there any period of creativity and economic growth that can be pinned to that condition?)

surely we need both?

I'm thinking about it. I'm not convinced that there aren't externalities some of the types of expression advocated for that aren't themselves hazardous and therefore worth carefully considering carefully the utility of such expression.
-
For example - presumably I could concoct a type of expression that was ultimately harmful to startups even in light of the argument that increased freedom of expression is beneficial.

I don't have a sense of where the artist communities were/are in the US. SF had a ton in the 60s, I'd assume, but how has that evolved?
-
SF had a ton in the 1990s and 2000s! Now: vastly fewer, to the extent that they remain at all. (I'd argue the scene is ~fully dead now - even where the standalone holdout abodes remain, the ecosystem/culture no longer does)
-
It'd be interesting to see if artist colonies predicted startup clusters, etc.. I feel like there were a lot more artists in NYC 1995 than 2010, which runs against the theory that it helps experimentation/ideas at least as manifested in startups. (obviously desirable anyway)

Yes, new ideas are born at the crossroads of different views. And it’s far easier to take risks (creatively, verbally, intellectually) if you won’t lose your home over it — consider your willingness to say radical things vs. someone barely making rent & could be fired for it.
