Claim: Excel is the dual of a programming language. In Excel you see the data but hide the logic. In a PL it's the opposite.

My gut is we don't have both yet just because of the immaturity of the domain. Notebooks are a step in this direction.

there are a lot of dimensions there. spreadsheets by default obscure the code dimension. some do highlighting tricks to try to show hidden structure. but yeah maybe breaking out of the grid, like notebooks as mentioned?

I think the constraint is that you have to be able to express your program in purely declarative form. If you can do that, then you can do Excel-style programming.

Generally we don’t have the data available or the IO events continually happening when programming. Some hybrid of notebooks and excel and TDD though?
