Yet I see very little discussion about global pilot shortages

Airlines are canceling flights (and going bankrupt!) — for lack of pilots.http://money.cnn.com/2017/07/27/news/companies/pilot-shortage-figures/index.html …

Half of the current pilot workforce is required to retire in the next 10 years (age limits) and we aren't making many new ones (eg military)

Fuel is expensive and feeds into the cost of getting a pilot's license, a major financial commitment — we have fewer commercial pilots.

A typical pipeline pathway would once have been ~ Air Force -> regional airline -> main line passenger air carrier

We additionally increased the requirements for being an officer in a regional airliner in 2013 from 250 hours to 1,500. That's 6x more time!

Anecdotally - some ways to build time (fly cancelled checks) are going away. & the new ATP reqs mean almost no one'll do it on their own.

In yesterday's mail - I get one of these a month probably. They really need more pilots.pic.twitter.com/KEYX0KNZ3K

I’m confused - that salary is not that big where is the unmet demand?

Average new college graduate salary is something like $61k. An industry paying $10k over that does not seem out of normal bounds

Especially when you figure it’s a stem-ish field and requires time away from home and bad hours - $70k seems like they aren’t even trying

aha the mistake is thinking of it as a "stem-ish" field. you'll want to look at some numbers for entry-level commercial pilots..

just because entry level pilots used to make peanuts does not mean there is a shortage now does it?

I'm having trouble deciding which side of the word 'now' the implied comma would land in your question.
