Thinking about disaster preparedness. There are a million lists — I've rarely seen one include a simple car battery & inverter for power.

Who's to say I wouldn't like to be able to provide power to other people's laptops in a post-disaster scenario?
-
Hence "to start" if you're not well prepared yet. Personally, I have an online 1.5 kVA UPS and a 3.5 kW generator with ~48 hours of fuel
-
Spec: must fit in my closet. I am unwilling to store fuel with my clothes.

Oh yeah: take a look at https://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B013JHYQNC … - they come up cheap on amazon every so often, and you use the USB batteries directly...
-
Or what might not be as obvious, you can charge the battery elsewhere and then use the dock as an inverter. More apartment-friendly - and..
-
.. the best emergency supplies are the ones that are part of your everyday life, and not "special", because they'll get maintained.
