Thinking about disaster preparedness. There are a million lists — I've rarely seen one include a simple car battery & inverter for power.

Understood, was just wondering what you wanted the backup power for.
-
My advice: USB power bank for phone, chemlights for dim area lighting, flashlight for bright point lighting. Ditch the laptop to start
-
Thanks. My question: why don't the lists deal with power
-
TBH That seems overly involved and a bit solipsistic —
-
Who's to say I wouldn't like to be able to provide power to other people's laptops in a post-disaster scenario?
-
Hence "to start" if you're not well prepared yet. Personally, I have an online 1.5 kVA UPS and a 3.5 kW generator with ~48 hours of fuel
-
Spec: must fit in my closet. I am unwilling to store fuel with my clothes.
-
Oh yeah: take a look at https://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B013JHYQNC … - they come up cheap on amazon every so often, and you use the USB batteries directly...

different spot on the maslow chart? back up power for comms that need infra that doesn't have power isn't backing anything up...
-
it's obviously nice to have (so it should be on *your* list) but food and water are vastly more "survive day one and two" than power *
-
* unless you *are* powering an efficient fridge for your insulin, or other critical consumable meds, but that mostly can't be on my list

Rechargeable small batteries, small solar panels, and solar lights are all part of my prep gear. Handy during any power outage, no cranking.
