The Jones Act is why freighters go China-to-LA w/o stopping in Hawaii. They would be unable to continue to more valuable US ports-of-call.

Hawaii in particular is served by Matson/Pasha from the mainland and only one company, Young Brothers, goes inter-island.

It's basically cheaper to ship a log from South America to China than anything from LA to Hawaii using a boat.

If the markets are similar, no Jones Act reprieve means a US shipping monopoly will (continue) to reap profits for all shipping to PR.
