Seeing massive uncontained forest fires makes me wish we allowed autonomous aircraft to do more flying work, like dropping flame retardant.

Automation tends to come to dull, dirty, and dangerous work first. Close-following terrain over a fire is not a place to risk a person.

Issue is that for flame retardant it's all about mass. Unless you want to automate a C-130 there's not really any utility

I am saying we should probably work on automating C-130s, DC3s & the other common fire haulers and get them in there, that it would be good.

I think it would be really difficult. Fires a dynamic in a way that most automation doesn't work well in

A very good point, the resources (planes and pilots) are often limited. Automation could also optimize the firefighting strategy
