Seeing massive uncontained forest fires makes me wish we allowed autonomous aircraft to do more flying work, like dropping flame retardant.

Line of sight is a loaded term with drones, I'll take you to mean "a (tech) roadmap" — and we have had autonomous aircraft since the 1950s.
