PSA because I’m seeing this a lot: CS is not the only kind of engineering. Many contribute to “tech industry”, also have problems.https://twitter.com/tqbf/status/893977712569835523 …
CS is still around the bottom of the barrel in engineeringhttps://twitter.com/tqbf/status/893978734814015488 …

Yes, but I have a longstanding discomfort with CS being assumed to be equivalent to engineering. (esp out here)

I'm not sure I understand. CS is taken to be equivalent in what sense?
-
When people out here say “I’m hiring an engineer” they mean a CS person.
-
Seeing CS contrasted against astronomy, math, etc seemed to stand alone as the E in STEM.
-
This bar graph also does a better job of displaying how CS has been doing over time..pic.twitter.com/eFqPSfFuVS

Oh I don’t discount the trend issue. But also, the “snapshot of today” is basically equivalent for E and CS, so… why ignore rest of E?
-
Bc twitter is too short? He said "almost alone" I accept it as shorthand
-
And yea, the Bay Area engineering world is fairly homogeneous in what type of engineer is meant by the word "engineer" I'm unbothered

One anecdote: EE was far worse for me in undergrad. Noticeably fewer women than in CS
-
Yeah, as with any dataset you're bound to see local variations. Also tbc "which field is the worst" is a game within "we all have a problem"
-
Truth -- separately from that, the engineering=CS confusion in the valley doesn't help. Lots of value & problems in other disciplines
