Reader had a full blogging system--you didn't even need to share an item to write a post. It caused communities to form around interests

It's really complex, I didn't use it much myself, but many people found it indispensable

Dang, I don't remember that, but Feedbin's sharing options make it pretty easy to reblog stuff.pic.twitter.com/fbkE9tkrrm

Definitely not that, though. It was about the private communities of essentially internet feed book clubs that formed.

People would chat all day INSIDE Google reader. It as as much chat room as feed reader or blogging platform.

For color on this - I somehow ended up reading and sharing with a bunch of [actual/working] scientists, while I was in college

I learned SO MUCH just by hanging out in the comments section. It was as though my news, for a time, was peer reviewed.

And it wasn't acrimonious, it was fun. Most of those people were IRL friends but I even just met one "Google Reader Friend" about a year ago

That bond is super strong, because you felt like you'd get to know someone else's mind

I think this is mostly what people mean when they say they miss Google Reader.

(At least, it's what I mean.) People always recommend another RSS tool but that's the least of what's missing from the experience of it imo

Another thing that's important about the "reblogging" or sharing feature - with the bookmarklet, you could grab shreds/quotes of things

So oftentimes you weren't reading or sharing whole articles, but a snippet. Very efficient for pulling marrow from long texts for example

You in turn were expected to curate what was actually interesting. There was a full link & you could add some written context at the top

Being introduced at a party as having a great gReader feed was an outstanding point of pride, and instantly gave something to talk about
