Uber actually does this to make sure the phone is mounted on a hands free mount. According to an Uber driver. I'm sure Lyft can do similar.

i went to a tech talk of a local auto insurance company doing telematics using only phones. learned the sensors in phones are… not accurate

but they could give out ODB-II dongles which would give accurate info. rapid deceleration is one of the biggest signals of unsafe driving
