Misfits, crazy ones, rebels, square pegs in round holes, etc. More inclusive than the Castro.
Edgy sure, but also absolutely a support system. The institutional services were generally hostile or bad.

An MIT friend of mine got through high school with no parents, working 2 jobs and living in his car. He's supposed to enjoy meal kits now?

MIT is extremely unique in that you can get in on guts and smarts. Way better than the rest of the top tier universities

But having that admissions policy means acknowledging that not every student is gonna be free of angst (to say the least) on arrival
