If I had $500M I'd try to build a highway through the Darien gap.

Seriously? Really fascinating. What would that do? Pros/Cons? (Why is this your answer?)

I believe there should be a road connecting these two great continents. The reasons that there isn't currently one are all infuriating.

What are the stated arguments? (Isn't there one for conservation?)

The Darien gap is a break in the pan-American highway. If there were no gap, it would enable another avenue for commerce between continents

Currently you have to fly or take a ferry to get past the gap. The land is largely swamp. I believe that can be overcome with engineering.

There would also be impact to the native people, but I believe that the environmental and cultural impact could be mitigated by including...

…them in the planning process. It's a very large area I'm confident a route could be found.

At $5M you could build a solar farm, and keep growing it for a a few decades, and then sell it and use the money to cure malaria.
