Sort of makes the suburbs a self fulfilling prophecy. Even if you wanted to try to raise kids in a city it's extremely expensive

In this case "Boston" is playing the role of one of the "suburbs" - the cost of living difference between the two cities isn't funny

The city is geared for the childless and well-off. The streets are hazardous, the public schools terrible, and citizens like it that way.

A lot of the schools are good; it really comes down to housing & daycare/after-school care.

Be wary of those sorts of school rankings and small sample sizes but I take your point. If you lose the lottery it's all bad news.
