Seems like a transition happens at some point and it became more socially acceptable to stare at a phone than to off into space/at nothing.
Walked past Dolores Park where a teen was hitting tennis balls at a wall solo while 2 apparent grandparents each stared at their phones

Or moreover one seems less likely now to hear "stop looking at your phone" - the exact location of "real reality" has blended

People used to bring a newspaper or a book places where they had to wait. A phone isn't much different.

Fair. And reading a newspaper at the table in front of someone else would have been similarly rude..
