Seems like a transition happens at some point and it became more socially acceptable to stare at a phone than to off into space/at nothing.

People used to bring a newspaper or a book places where they had to wait. A phone isn't much different.

Fair. And reading a newspaper at the table in front of someone else would have been similarly rude..
