Just a friendly reminder for when you are reading/writing tech press releases: 3D printing is basically never a way to save time.

-
That's quite a bad example as the article talks about the long 80-hour weeks designing it.
-
I guess it would depend what you are trying to optimize... trade offs.
-
It's a good example of what
@starsandrobots was thinking, where they invested massive inefficient work just to say it's 3D printed -
If this is how most people are using 3D printers then I retract my disagreement, apparently most people are crazy
-
you are not crazy... I can't seem to find the right article...

a more serious example is test prints of plastic parts before production tooling.
-
for looks-like/works-like I always advise *against* printing and push for cncing off production material
-
for iterating on ergonomics it's great, but technically clay or foam are faster.
-
I wouldn't use clay or foam to test fit other parts, but for many cases, you're absolutely right.

using AM for Conformal Cooling injection moulding applications https://www.eos.info/press/customer_case_studies/salcomp … lower cycle times!

low volume production of jigs and fixtures! http://www.stratasys.com/solutions/additive-manufacturing/jigs-and-fixtures … saves time

Good for mockups/prototypes (injection mold will be a whole new process). Stuff that's not possible with conventional means.
-
One-off yet complex test fixtures, holders/brackets/adapters. Used as engineering support tool rather than production tool
-
If part is simple and you can cut/glue it up, then no time savings. If part will be made by 1000's, no savings.
