      Before the iPhone, cell phones were a socially mandatory purchase, but every option was terrible.

      Before the apple watch, watches were optional, perhaps going obsolete because of iPhones, and worked roughly mostly okay.

          in my experience, watches are still optional. I like my Android Wear, but it's not necessary. I forgot to wear it today.

          exactly. they were optional in the sense that some people, but not all people, needed one. cellphones not so optional.

          I never got into smartwatches but my coworkers did. I stopped wearing my dumbwatches bc I kept getting asked why I wore them

          The interesting bit is that during this time there was a huge revival in mechanical watches, which was becoming a lost art.
