I discovered that a Mac mini with http://Server.app can be used natively with Time Machine; giving that a shot.

It doesn't route, but plus an external hard drive it might be more serviceable.

I tried adding a USB disk to my TP-link router but found that I would need third party firmware to mount Mac formatted media
