@starsandrobots (though I suppose that depends on your date threshold for the uptick) -
@MikellTaylor hm selected those examples b/c Profs. Ros Piccard and Cynthia Breazeal have retained their professorships. True there too? -
@MikellTaylor rather: it is not the case that those co's leaders have continued to also have research groups, right? -
@starsandrobots ah true. Interesting. Didn't realise that part.

@starsandrobots I think the initial research (PoC?) done at institutions, then spun off into startups. -
@durumcrustulum is the push into startups an increasing trend? -
@starsandrobots not sure. Maybe it's just correlated with the increase in startups overall and availability of VC funding? -
@durumcrustulum@starsandrobots it sure seems like in my field (chemistry) there is a huge uptick in professor founded startups

@starsandrobots was speaking to a professor in TW a few days ago about this. Says this is a huge cause for concern here. -
@starsandrobots driven strongly by 'Publish or Perish' - either focus on very obscure research with low hanging fruit or start a consultancy -
@starsandrobots students are either free source of ideas or free labor. In the business case it's unethical to use that leverage for work. - 1 more reply
