      @starsandrobots population of the whole US in 1776 was 2.5 million -- less than Chicago or LA proper today!

      @starsandrobots I'd be surprised if it added more than a couple million though. quick Google finds sketchy estimate of 50-100k Indians in CA

      @starsandrobots also I kind of think of the US as the basic entity anyway, not the land, because of the white settlement pattern

          @starsandrobots settlers and immigrants took over that land, so culture mostly Eastern colonies / Europe and not people originally there
