TIL: The US population *doubled* in 40 years, between 1880-1920 (via The Big Roads https://www.hoopladigital.com/title/11248953 )
@rsnous sure, although those borders are incomparable (also excluding today's Chicago or LA, right? (And any populations there then)

@rsnous I can't imagine what that sort of growth feels like (although it apparently involved a lot of road congestion)Thanks. Twitter will use this to make your timeline better. UndoUndo

@starsandrobots I'd be surprised if it added more than a couple million though. quick Google finds sketchy estimate of 50-100k Indians in CA -
@starsandrobots also I kind of think of the US as the basic entity anyway, not the land, because of the white settlement pattern -
@rsnous hm, I'm not sure I understand. How do you mean? -
@starsandrobots settlers and immigrants took over that land, so culture mostly Eastern colonies / Europe and not people originally there -
@rsnous oh I see. So you're comparing the population of *that* through time regardless of the land it occupies. -
@starsandrobots yeah; not the only approach, land-centered / density-centered is valid too, but that was my bias
