One week after publishing this, I am overwhelmed by the positive response. Thanks to the more than 7k people who read and shared.
-
A number of MIT alum have stated to me that they will work to support, or will designate their alumni donations to the legal clinic.
-
Also great to see and hear alum who "bleed MIT" & are engaging in changing the current state of things. TBT October:pic.twitter.com/eIP5Kqfa9J

I can't tell you how heartening it is to see this — the response in 2007 was so wholly different to what's happening now.

@starsandrobots the last time I saw Aaron Swartz he asked me if I knew anyone at MIT who could help him. :( -
@starsandrobots a different situation but a manifestation of the same priorities. -
@natfriedman augh. I feel much pain and anguish about Aaron, as we all do, on which I could write several more essays. -
@natfriedman in particular, not being allowed to speak about my case and how that damped my abilities to get help. So too his. Awful. -
@starsandrobots@natfriedman I emailed Aaron and offered to help but never heard back. It turns out we shared a lawyer, though. -
@_dml@starsandrobots I should have thought to introduce him to you. -
@natfriedman@starsandrobots I wish I had met him. I was absolutely devastated that MIT could have done so much for him and chose not to.

@starsandrobots@EFF@alicemazzy be sued by the arrested if they do—for wrongful arrest. Everything is illegal in Massachusetts -
@rwaldron I discuss this a bit in the video of my talk, will publish tomorrow. -
@starsandrobots look fwd to it. I will admit that the Commonwealth's (criminal) court system is a trigger, but I want to hear your thoughts

@starsandrobots@EFF@alicemazzy I lived in Boston from 1999 to 2012 and never once heard this story (also, avid news reader). -
@rwaldron if you were reading the news there's no way that's true. Cover of the Herald, front of the Globe. Nowhere I wanted to be less, but -
@starsandrobots did you see my follow-up to my first comment? I realize that my first message sounded like "doubt", I didn't mean that

@starsandrobots don't know if there's process for earmarking donations back to the 'tute, but I would do that every year if I could@wooster -
@starsandrobots sorta: "here's my donation for the year, but I need to know it is going specifically to the student legal clinic"@wooster -
@travisatkins@starsandrobots It is possible for other things—student groups, finaid, schools, sports. I haven't looked yet for the clinic. -
@travisatkins@starsandrobots How much money do they need?
