We have entered the realm of sub 5-second #rubikscube-ing

@shaunmmaguire is cubing still seen as evidence of spatial comprehension, or is it extreme pattern-matching? -
@shaunmmaguire (eg the decline in perception of chess skill as evidence of strategic thinking vs computer-aided pattern matching sport) -
@starsandrobots I've asked myself the same Q! My view is that at sub 10s the brain is doing algebra rather than geometry (pattern matching) -
@shaunmmaguire huh, how so? (implicitly: is algebraic comprehension faster than geometric?) -
@starsandrobots lots of loaded assumptions in my tweet. Math is sometimes broken into: analysis, algebra and geometry. -
@starsandrobots algebra is inherently rule based and is amenable to being programmed into a comp. Like pattern matching. -
@starsandrobots geometry is much harder to codify. (Much progress comes when we can do this like algebraic geom vs 4-manifold topology)
