@starsandrobots The way *I* do it is I put it in VI emulation mode ("viper").

@zooko hah — well, 'spirit of the challenge' and all that. I'm actually curious right now for inexplicable. Stashing this idea til May 1 :) -
@starsandrobots@zooko I don't think using viper mode takes away from the spirit of the challenge. -
@starsandrobots@zooko It turns out there is more to emacs than the difference between using viper mode or not. I prefer emacs+viper to vi. -
@ambimorph@zooko ok interesting. I'm a dewy newb to the point that I'm going to learn about "modes" later today. thanks, will check it out!

@billy79 well first I thought I'd try emacs. Now I have 3 problems.

@starsandrobots took me about five tries to build up the patience for it, but the built in tutorial isn't awful. -
@starsandrobots oh, and if you're on a Mac, here's a nice plain-vanilla GUI Emacs build: http://emacsformacosx.com -
@bmastenbrook hm. lots of stuff I do is over ssh. do you use this? or, is it helpful for learning? -
@starsandrobots I use it to have multiple windows ("frames" in emacs). Emacs also has a great way to access files over ssh, called "tramp".

@starsandrobots Start the tutorial (C-h t) and do it until you get bored. Then use it for a couple decades and you're all set. ;-) -
@peterseibel@starsandrobots FYI, "C-h t" means "control h, release control, then t". I remember not getting that at first. :-)
