A quick thread about the Pipistrel Alpha and electric airplanes —

The other operation that's adopting the Alpha Electro is also extremely cool — "Tomorrow's Air Museum" https://www.tamuseum.org based at Compton airport teaches inner city kids about flying, with involvement from Tuskegee Airmen(!)

It's going to be so great to track these early-adopters as they lead the vanguard of a whole new era of aviation/flight.

Today, Tomorrow’s Aeronautical Museum is demonstrating this electric airplane at Chino airport. Here it is:pic.twitter.com/BSaYHk92lU

Need to move to San Francisco to finish my ppl

I think you mean.. move to Fresno.
-
Oops. Yes. Not sure where I read San Francisco..
-
Yeah! Also so far you can only get an LSA license but I am hopeful that it might be possible to go full PPL (or even Commercial, CFI?!) one day!

But at what range? Do we get cheap reliable flight up to N hundred miles, then it's back to liquid fuels in their expensive finicky engines? Will airports be a bottleneck? Would be awesome for crop-dusting.
-
I don’t think it has the power density, airspeed, payload, or range to make a good crop duster. If you haven’t looked recently, those planes are pretty strong. This is a “light sport” model, and only a two-seater. Has about 1 hour flight time with reserve. These are early days.
-
Didn't know that about crop dusters, was just thinking of short range, and the sort of intermittent use that makes you hate internal combustion engine maintenance.
