Mentioned to a former prof I might be interested in a PhD but didn’t know if my app would be competitive. No pause and instead an enthusiastic YES YOU SHOULD APPLY

I felt so behind since I didn’t code before college, and assumed I’d be bad at it. 6.001 tutorials were arranged by experience but after a few weeks my TA moved me out of the no-experience group into another tutorial.
-
Nice! What led the TA to move you out of the no-experience group? Was it the experience of being moved to a different group itself that you credit?
-
Yeah, it was her vote of confidence that stuck with me.

Classmate (girl) needed a sidekick in programming contest so I signed up as well. We were 13.

College orientation, a brand new friend told me about a proof-based version of freshman multivariable calc. I asked him if he thought I was good enough at math to do it. He said of course! I switched in. 8ish yrs later and I'm still writing proofs in my PhD thesis research :)

building a network of people (attending meetups, joining
@PyLadiesMEL and making friends who were senior devs) --> being able to ask them questions to get unblocked, this gave me the ability to learn faster and feel more confident! Thanks. Twitter will use this to make your timeline better. UndoUndo

Lots of luck. Finally doing super-well in a class and being asked to TA. Lots of practice dealing with bullshit.
