Also considering motorcycles have a 35x vehicle fatality rate per mile traveled relative to cars, individual benefit is probably negative

I agree, but a bit of nuance here I found interesting: every motorcyclist I‘ve talked to about this feels bad about being loud. BUT they’re all told to buy louder pipes when possible *as a safety measure* — cars often change lanes into them otherwise.

Are there numbers on how effective it is to have louder pipes? Germans see American motorcycle culture as aspirational because Germans aren't allowed to make that much noise; there are laws restricting sound emissions. So, how much safer are American motorcyclists?
