Secure communication is crucial. Plea from cryptographers & researchers on Guardian's irresponsible WhatsApp piece: http://technosociology.org/?page_id=1687 pic.twitter.com/YB0Y2PrPzj

WhatsApp claims E2EE, yet has the ability to potentially read any message sent. And you think only some people should know?

That is not true. Read the piece signed by some od worlds' top independent cryptographers.

My apologies, but I don't see they had a choice. People rely on proprietary software. It must do what it says. UX is no excuse.

WhatsApp cannot guarantee their data will never be compromised, or isn't already given the nature of US laws and surveillance capability.

The only defence that matters is E2EE. WhatsApp cannot give up what they don't have.

I guess I'm struggling to understand why any expert would still recommend an application that falsely claims E2EE.

IMO a false claim indicates dishonesty or incompetence. Neither are desirable attributes in those that make such important software.

Bugger, I misunderstood the Guardian's article, @zeynep. I assumed WhatsApp could read all offline messages with temporary keys.

In the event the sender was offline when the receiver came online, I assumed they would complete in transit messages. They do not.

In transit messages are only completed when the sender is online. WhatsApp can't read them by default, they must specifically MITM a user.
