May is #MentalHealthAwarenessMonth, but too many Georgia communities do not have the vocabulary or the resources to address mental health – because the old way in Georgia said that mental health treatment wasn’t a smart investment for our state. 1/ #gapol
As a result, mental illness has been stigmatized, not treated. People with nowhere else to turn succumb to self-medication, often entering our overburdened criminal justice system. That’s exactly what happened to my youngest brother, Walter. 2/ #gapol
Walter is brilliant, dynamic, and one of the kindest people I’ve ever known – but he suffers from mental health issues that went undiagnosed and untreated because my family lacked health insurance and access to services. 3/ #gapol
Instead of getting help, Walter self-medicated, made bad choices to support his drug habit, and he just finished serving time in prison. Too many Georgians know Walter’s story all too well. 4/ #MentalHealthAwareness #gapol
