When I moved from the UK to the US, they just checked I was up to date on my tax and said "cheerio then - have fun!" and that's the last I heard from the UK tax office. Because I don't live there any more, so why would I pay taxes there?

Yeah, and it seems like legislation that’s unlikely to change, since it affects a minority of constituents and the ones who are no longer engaged in the system otherwise. :(

It might change upwards. Maybe the US decides "hey - we want the full 25%"

It's certainly one of those "super hilarious" things about the US.
We're taught in school about how the US fought for its independence because it thought it was unfair to pay taxes to someplace they didn't live anymore, and didn't have representation in ...

... and leave out the small detail that after we won that fight, we decided _not_ to put it into any of our laws that we couldn't do that back.

Indeed. I've lived, worked, and been taxed here for 16 years, am a legal resident, but I still cannot vote because... fuck me, that's why. It's pretty awesome.

It was 13 years for me before I pulled the ripcord. I even got called for jury duty!

I've been called twice already, despite not being a citizen.

It was so nice to just tick the box marked "Not a US citizen" and send it back. Alas, no more.
