By loading up the atmosphere with carbon dioxide, fossil fuel emissions have acidified the oceans. That’s because our oceans absorb CO2, and CO2 dissolved in seawater turns into carbonic acid which lowers its pH. 2/

Lowered PH in turn causes calcium carbonate to dissolve. Calcium carbonate is what marine animals that have external shells (exoskeletons) are made of. 3/

Another recent study just reported that acidification in the Pacific Ocean is causing the shells of Dungeness carbs to dissolve. 4/https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.cleanfuture.co.in/2020/01/30/ocean-acidification-crabs-shells/amp/ …

That’s terrible but this new study in Nature is even more alarming because it shows that acidified ocean water—caused by increased CO2 concentrations in the atmosphere—is dissolving the shells of zooplankton that are the basis of the entire marine food web. 5/

These little armored guys, all together, belong to a phyllum of one-called animals called Foraminifera that excrete little calcium shells around themselves. 6/pic.twitter.com/DYgZ8pyklb

Foraminifera eat bacteria, algae, diatoms. In turn, they are eaten by all sorts of invertebrates and fish. When Foraminifera die, their shells become ocean sediment and therefore habitat for many other of other species. They are absolutely critical to the ocean’s ecosystem. 7/

Okay, so this new study finds that the shells of foraminifera are now 76 percent thinner thanks to the climate crisis. 8/

Here’s another image of these dissolving little ocean animals that you may have never heard about. Know that our fates are intertwined. “Pants and animals most remote in nature are bound together by a web of intricate relations.” —Charles Darwin 9/pic.twitter.com/00G6ZlOgr4

So much appreciation for this important to lead author and microfossil geologist
@DrLynzFox and her co-authors. Now it’s up to the rest of us to act on this data. FINPrikaži ovu nit -
Sorry Mr Darwin for the typo. Here’s that quote again: “Plants and animals most remote in nature are bound together by a web of intricate relations.” In other words, we are all connected. Dissolving plankton are sending a message to us.
