Not sure I follow? Do you mean: it’s valuable to know that just-plain-truth is always available with sufficient effort?

Yes. Not practically available. It's valuable to know it exists, even if not tractable or reachable.

Ah. I’m not persuaded that it exists, and not persuaded that it would be valuable to know that does, if it did. Do you have in mind particular reasons to think these?

That an objective reality exists I take as fairly self-evident. I could talk about it but it'd get way too long. It's valuable because it allows the idea that some descriptions fit reality better than others, and without that we fall into radical relativism.

I agree that radical relativism is wrong and harmful; I don’t agree with the rationalist program for avoiding it. And, I agree that Twitter is not a good medium for sorting that out!

What would you say the rationalist program is? Based on what you say elsewhere I suspect you have something quite narrow in mind.

Definition from the Eggplant draft… not sure this is exactly apposite in this context, though?pic.twitter.com/tfQtkV93vk

Yes that's what I thought. I'm just doubtful that there are many people who consistently believe that. Some might sound like it sometimes, but I wouldn't assume too much from that.

I agree. Rationalism is an eternalism; and like other eternalisms, it is so obviously wrong that no one can maintain it consistently. But you can do considerable harm to yourself and others by trying.

For some values of trying, yes. For others not, shooting for the moon and all that. You just need to know when to stop.

None the less, Meaningness is explicitly targeted at exactly the group who have harmed themselves by not knowing when to stop, not knowing how to stop, or not knowing what to do once they've stopped. I think continuous reminders of these errors is super useful

re nebulousity, especially of categories, I think the vagueness of ordinary categories is mostly inseparable from their utility.

@Meaningness, in world where all things have vastly many useless properties, any useful category (which must have several instances) has to weigh what properties are and aren't relevant to the purpose of the category. It is1 reply 0 retweets 2 likes - Show replies
