Among people I know, those who went through selective education seem to have mostly positive or neutral memories of schooling, while those who didn't have a more negative view on average

Afaik comprehensive schooling slightly worsens (academic) outcomes of top performers but improves outcomes for lower performers. Similar to mixed sex schooling incidentally (girls lose out, boys benefit). Wouldn't be surprised if same for satisfaction - they're probably linked.

Also the other thing is that comprehensive schools often split classes by ability (upper/lower sets), so it's not necessarily an easy comparison.

Yeah they can almost end up with schools within schools at that rate, such as exist in the US

I went to top-performer selective girls school and it was definitely best for me
