One advantage of being Other / bullied from a young age is that you don't build your self-esteem from other people's opinions of you. Foundations are largely internal. Disadvantage is in later life you ignore good people who you should be building relationships with.

My answer relates to being taught by my sect that other people are all tainted/sinners/dangerous. It's basically an easier cognitive load to simply ignore *everything* about everyone else. Being smart & self sufficient allows this ignoring to happen for a long time unnoticed.
