I often feel deeply misunderstood because my foundations are so thoroughly internal. Occasionally I meet people who are in on the path of building the internal stuff, but they don't realize just how deep they can lay the foundation.
One advantage of being Other / bullied from a young age is that you don't build your self-esteem from other people's opinions of you. Foundations are largely internal. Disadvantage is in later life you ignore good people who you should be building relationships with.

When I hit them with something truly left field they return to attributing it to external factors, which is understandable.

From my own experience, it boils down to trust issues. I’ve been ‘betrayed’ as a kid by those who I thought to be friends who later became my bullies. It becomes difficult to distinguish between positive and negative people in your life.
