These guys were not precursors, they were pretty late to the game. Emo started in the 1980s as a part of the hardcore punk scene and was influenced by Minor Threat, Husker Du, and Black Flag. Rites of Spring and Embrace established most of the tropes found in emo music/culture.

This. If anything, new wave like Echo and the Bunnymen, the Smiths, and the Cure were the precursors for the 00s emo aesthetic.
