main reason why I loathe the "male gaze"-framing is that it invariably implies that 1) sexual attraction is incompatible with respect and 2) being attracted to female bodies does women harm + is intrinsically gross and a sign of lacking self-control desiring sex is not violence.

I can recommend a movie that involves sexual attraction and not the male gaze - Portrait of a Lady on Fire. Male gaze is something more than what you've described, as others have pointed out.

That movie is all about the eroticism of equality, of horizontality - there's no dominance/submission, or predator/prey, or capture/be captured dynamics occuring. They are both subjects. The cinematography focuses on their faces, and not their bodies. It's still very hot.

That sounds great, and I'm excited to watch it. I'm also bothered by this, though. It sounds a lot like this is about a female gaze instead of a male gaze. See thread starting here:https://twitter.com/slab52/status/1316115754790596608 …

I want a sexual/sexualizing focus on women's bodies to be culturally accepted:https://twitter.com/Elodes12/status/1316120934290542592 …

Isn't it? I mean, isn't that what the culture has been for a long time? And now it's swinging in the other direction, sure, but it's important to understand why the direction change is occurring at all

It really depends on which culture you're talking about. I suspect that in the cultures @Elodes12 finds himself in, the answer is no.

I think we could look at media over the last few decades to get the temperature on this - it seems only in the last... decade? Maybe less? That the culture has swung toward punishing men's sexual attraction toward women? (I'd be curious how
@Elodes12 would describe his culture.)1 reply 0 retweets 1 like -

Definitely agree with this. I'm talking about culture in the last decade. My points aren't at all valid if you go two decades back. I do believe they're valid now though
