I wish all the people who ever thought of me as kind or funny or wise would tell me. I want to do this more for others, too. I naïvely think that'd make the world better... Or would it just blow up egos and create perverse incentives? Hmm, just re-invented virtue-signalling..?

Giving compliments however seems like it’s more deeply entwined with positives for the psyche and the soul, so people should do it as liberally as they like (and since they’re forgotten, there’s no downside)

Yes, I think this is closer to how I imagine it being a good thing. Not the direct effect of compliments on the receiver, but for the giver to exercise the muscles gratitude and appreciation and contributing to a culture of it. ~= giving compliments is better for the giver
