A while back everyone Finnish I know just LOST IT when Elovena, a company that does rolled oats changed the folk dress wearing girl from 1925 branding into a "modern" woman, to better market abroad now that gluten free oat stuff is popular everywhere https://twitter.com/LoFiRepublican/status/1309899041652830208 …pic.twitter.com/XZCv1wlFoE

It's extra interesting to me, because folk dresses were essentially invented by a branding committee in 1885 to show to the Russian ruler that Finns are a nation of civilized cultured people. A lot of things thought to be "traditional" and good are like this.

Some examples of "old tradition" that's actually just a ~19th century natinalist branding effort to seem too civilized to colonize: 🍝Most European cuisine (especially Italian) 🧘‍♂️Zen Buddhism as we know it, cleaned up of hells and demons 🏅The Olympics

You think Italians in the 15th centure were a unified nation with one identity and they all ate pizza and bolognese? Grow up, that's branding that stuck. You think Zen is actually historically similar to Western thought? Grow up, they tidied it up all neutral and philosophical.

Kilts and bagpipes were also invented for the sake of a Scottish national identity (invented by the English rulers)
