I tend to recommend that people try to be the dumbest person in the room (ie surround yourself with smart people), but given how good it feels to be the Expert, I wonder if it's not good for one's psyche to seek out groups in which you can play roles you aren't used to.

Are you saying you no longer have anyone you look up to intellectually, or something else?

I certainly can no longer be present in a physical room with them (pre-pandemic) there are too few. I AM an introvert tbf but yeah I have an above average iq, a passion for intellect type stuff and I’m 36. Finding someone smarter or with more experience than me is now v hard

I don't know you or your life, and I believe that you're smart and intellectually curious, so what do I know, but I'm going to try being bold and say: there is so much more out there! AI researchers, superforecasters, Tim Urban, the most interesting intellectuals on twitter.

There's immersion in their work, there's diving down the rabbit hole (here's one if you're not familiar, it's a mind trip https://reducing-suffering.org/ ) and then there's the chance to be friends with them, if you spend the time! (Assuming

I could be totally wrong, and maybe no economist or mathematician living blows your mind (there's a fields medalist making youtube videos: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QOTf8KfrZFU&list=PL8yHsr3EFj53rSexSz7vsYt-3rpHPR3HB …), but I hope you'll understand if I find it hard to believe.

If I understand you correctly, it's not enough to seek out intellectually interesting things that exist on the world, you're talking about the literal "who you're in the room with" - friends, colleagues, twitter mutuals. Is that right?
