Over my years of freelancing and having multiple 6- or 9-month long breaks between contracts, I've noticed that at first people (myself and others) need a whole six months to chill out, veg out, play games, catch up with friends, health appointments, holidays and so on

I'm in one of those modes now. I don't think knowledge work is best done at a simmering 6. Rather, a marathon of sprints from 0 to 10. Plan, sprint, rest, reflect, repeat. Explore modes help with the rest and reflect parts. Sometimes even the planning.
