I was taught that man was building this tower to reach the heavens and do away with the need for God, but the Bible verse actually says they wanted to "make a name for themselves".

The whole story is about language - man cooperating in the same language and then being thwarted by having their languages confused - but the creation of a name is the seat of power in this particular magic spell. Powerful enough to warrant intervention from God

With this in mind, I find it interesting one of the first stories of God and man in the Bible is God bringing things for man to name them.
